Spend time in the produce aisle

The produce aisle in your grocery store can be a place of prayer: it all goes back to Latin. You can learn a lot from Latin! Rogare when translated from Latin into English means to ask. For generations Christians have observed Rogation Days—days when we ask God to give us thankful hearts and praise God for the blessings of the earth (seedtime and harvest). There are prayers now for commerce and industry too.

One way to pray in life is to keep God on your mind all day long. Doing that with all of the work, errands and distractions might seem impossible. Transform the distractions, errands and work into prayer. Ask God to give you a grateful heart for the blessing of a job. When you go to the grocery store (or farmer’s market), praise God for the blessings of all the fruits and vegetables—the healthy and balanced living we have.

But, before you get distracted, say this prayer for Stewardship of Creation (a Rogation Day Prayer)

O merciful Creator, whose hand is open wide to satisfy the needs of every living creature: Make us, we beseech thee, ever thankful for thy loving providence; and grant that we, remembering the account that we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of thy bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
